This rosary bracelet is named after St. Teresa of Calcutta, also known as Mother Teresa. Born in August 1910 in Skopje, she was named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Her father died when she was only eight years old which put her family under financial hardship. When she was eighteen years old, Mother Teresa left home to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland. It was here that she received the name Sister Mary Teresa. In 1929, Mother Teresa went to Calcutta, India for the first time. For twenty years, she taught at St. Mary’s school for girls. She even became the principal.

In 1946, Mother Teresa received the first pull from Christ to found the order the Missionaries of Charity. Christ revealed to Mother Teresa His desire for her to serve the poor and neglected, to love them. The mission of the Missionaries of Charity was to serve the poorest of the poor.

Two years later, this work began. One December 21st, Mother Teresa went to the slums of Calcutta for the first time. She served the dying, the sick, the homeless. Others began to join her work. As her order grew and their work was recognized, they were asked to come to more cities in India and then Venezuela. The Missionaries of Charity then went to almost every communist country including Albania, Cuba, and Russia.

Attention to her work continued to grow. She received multiple awards including the Nobel Peace Prize. She said that each prize was “for the glory of God and in the name of the poor.”

Unknown until her death, Mother Teresa experienced great suffering in her interior life. She experienced something called “The Dark Night of the Soul.” Basically, she felt completely separated from. She felt no consolation in prayer. However, even with this heavy burden, she loved the Lord greatly. She desired the sacraments.

Mother Teresa was canonized in September 2016.  St. Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us!

This rosary bracelet is named after St. Maximilian Kolbe. He was born in January 1894 and named Raymund Kolbe. When he was twelve years old, he had a vision of Mary. He said about it, “That night I asked the Mother of God what was to become of me. Then she came to me holding two crowns, one white, the other red. She asked me if I was willing to accept either of these crowns. The white one meant that I should persevere in purity, and the red that I should become a martyr. I said that I would accept them both."

Just one year after that when he was thirteen years old, he went with his brother Francis to join the Conventual Franciscans. Here he received the name Maximilian. As a religious, he earned two doctorates from the Pontifical Gregorian University. His doctorates were in philosophy and theology.

He became a priest in 1918. His primary work included promotion of Mary throughout Poland. He also started two monasteries, one in India and the other in Japan.

Eventually, his health required him to return to Poland. When World War II began, he opened a temporary hospital to help those in need.  He also provided shelter to refugees including thousands of Jews. His monastary also published many anti-Nazi literature.

In 1941, Maximilian was arrested by the Gestapo and taken to the Pawiak prison. Shortly after that, he was moved to Auschwitz. As a priest, Maximilian was harassed and abused severely in the camp. After two months in Auschwitz, he volunteered to take the place of a man who was sentenced to death. This man had been chosen randomly with others simply to die as a warning to the other prisoners. The man had a family and Maximilian took his place.

Maximilian died on August 14, 1941. He was canonized by John Paul II in October 1982. John Paul II declared him to be a martyr.

This rosary bracelet is named after Our Lady of La Leche. Devotion to Our Lady of La Leche really began in the Middle Ages, but it stems from a grotto in Bethlehem that has existed since the 4th Century. It is believed that the devotion was brought from the Holy Land to Europe during the time of the Crusades. Many sought the intercession of Our Lady of La Leche for help in conceiving, having healthy pregnancies and children, and more. During the time of Philip III in Spain, a woman was giving birth and it was expected that she and the child would die. However, many began to pray for the intercession of Our Lady of La Leche. The woman and her child lived.

This bracelet is named after St. John Vianney.  John Vianney was born in France in 1786. He grew up in a very Catholic family. However, in 1790, priests and religious had to go into hiding during the French Revolution. The Vianney family hid many of them and because of this John met many different religious and priests. To him, priests were heros. In secret, he prepared for his First Holy Communion and eventually his Confirmation as well.

John’s education was difficult because of the disruption of the revolution. He worked hard, but struggled, especially with Latin. Eventually, the Catholic Church was allowed once again in France and religious freedom was established.  John began studying for the priesthood, but was drafted into Bonaparte’s army. John eventually deserted and for over a year, lived in hiding in the small village of Les Noes. When deserters were forgiven, John returned to school and continued his education in seminary.

He was ordained a priest in 1815. He eventually was appointed pastor of a parish in Ars, France. The people in his parish were poorly formed in the faith and it was a great struggle for John. He instructed the people in his homilies and spent eleven to twelve hours in the confessional daily. His attentiveness to the parishioners had a great impact.  A once almost empty church became filled for Mass. Parishioners were praying and receiving the sacraments.

John Vianney did all he could for his parish. He not only administered the sacraments, but he also did incredible penances. He was canonized in May 1025. He is the patron saint of parish priests.

This rosary bracelet is named for St. Gianna Beretta Molla.  Gianna was born in 1922 in Magenta, Italy.  She grew up in a large Catholic family and enjoyed skiing and mountain climbing.  She studied medicine and eventually specialized in pediatrics.  In 1955, Gianna married Pietro Molla.  Together they had three children and suffered two miscarriages.  When Gianna became pregnant for the fifth time, her doctor discovered a tumor in her uterus.  A hysterectomy was recommended, but Gianna refused in defense of her unborn baby's life.  The tumor was removed without performing the hysterectomy.  In April 1962, Gianna's daughter was born.  However, complications from delivery caused an infection in Gianna.  The following week, Gianna passed away.  Her daughter named Gianna Emanuela Molla became a doctor herself and travels the world sharing the story of her mother.

Our Lady of Lourdes is the name of a Marian apparition that took place in Lourdes, France in 1858 to a young girl named Bernadette. When she was just 13 years old, Bernadette was collecting wood near a grotto next to a riverbank. While looking at the cave, it was suddenly filled with light. She saw a woman dressed in a white robe with a blue sash, and a veil on her head. On her feet were two yellow roses. In her hands, she clasped a rosary. The woman asked Bernadette to pray the rosary with her. When they finished, the woman disappeared. Bernadette returned to the grotto the following Sunday and then a third time. The lady then spoke to her and requested that she come to the grotto every day for the next fifteen days. During those visits, she asked Bernadette to pray for the conversion of sinners, to ask the priests to build a chapel on that spot, and to drink water from the stream. Eventually, the woman revealed to Bernadette that she was Mary, the Mother of Jesus. She wanted Bernadette to pray for sinners.

Bernadette’s visits to the grotto began to draw attention. Some believed her and some did not that she was having visions of Mary and speaking with her. They watched as she received messages from Mary and did the things she asked of her. This included scraping away at the dirt next to the cave until a spring of water gushed forth.

Eventually, Bernadette was listened to and the grotto became a place of worship. The water from the spring was seen as holy and many miracles occurred from it.

When she was 22 years old, Bernadette became a nun. She dedicated her life to God and died when she was 36 years old.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes is visited by more than 3 million pilgrims every year. The spring continues to gush forth and is still used for healing both physically and spiritually.
