Each entry in 150 People, Places, and Things You Never Knew Were Catholic is rich with detail and nuance. Here are Catholic stories full of drama, decisions, and inspiration.

The fruits of our Catholic Faith are all around us, and the ways in which the Church has shaped history and the secular world can be found in science, art, pop culture, sports, and more. Abandonment to Divine Providence

Abandonment to Divine Providence
de Caussade, Jean-Pierre
$18.00
For more than 250 years, this simple classic of inspiration has guided readers of all faiths to the open-hearted acceptance of God's will that is the sure path to serenity, happiness, and spiritual peace.

"A spiritual classic of the first order... a book for all those who truly seek God." --Dom David Knowles

"Father de Caussade has a wonderful way of encouraging the doubtful, of nurturing the personal surrender that is so much a part of the development of faith. The book is a mystery of its own -- and is definitely not for Christians only." --Rabbi Joshua Chasan

"Abandonment to Divine Providence is a classic perhaps more necessary now than ever before. It's a little book that rightly rejects the spirituality of fear and trembling (and the modern preoccupation with dreary self-absorption) in favor of an abiding trust in God's active benevolence. This is a work one reads again and again, always with gratitude and astonishment." --Donald Spoto, Author of Blue Angel and The Dark Side of Genius

Confessions of St Augustine

Confessions of St Augustine
$19.00

Augustine's Confessions is one of the most influential and most innovative works of Latin literature. Written in the author's early forties in the last years of the fourth century A.D. and during his first years as a bishop, they reflect on his life and on the activity of remembering and interpreting a life. Books I-IV are concerned with infancy and learning to talk, schooldays, sexual desire and adolescent rebellion, intense friendships and intellectual exploration. Augustine evolves and analyses his past with all the resources of the reading which shaped his mind: Virgil and Cicero, Neoplatonism and the Bible. This volume, which aims to be usable by students who are new to Augustine, alerts readers to the verbal echoes and allusions of Augustine's brilliant and varied Latin, and explains his theological and philosophical questioning of what God is and what it is to be human. The edition is intended for use by students and scholars of Latin literature, theology and Church history.

Divine Intimacy: Meditations on the Interior Life for Every Day of the Liturgical Year

Divine Intimacy: Meditations on the Interior Life for Every Day of the Liturgical Year
$69.95

This Book of Meditations is a classic and is seeped in Carmelite spirituality. For every day it offers two meditations, in liturgical arrangement, that enable the soul to enter the conscious presence of God and to reflect on the theme of the day. These are followed by a ‘Colloquy’ that helps the person at prayer to start a friendly conversation with God where acts of praise and love, petition and thanksgiving are made, together with good resolutions for the future. Here we are at the very heart of prayer, which is a heart-to-heart encounter in faith with the living God.

Divine Intimacy is the highest state attainable on earth. In this union of love, the soul produces acts of love which have an immense apostolic influence on a multitude of souls. This knowledge of the ways that lead to God, according to the teaching of the renowned Spanish mystics, is distilled into the pages of this book.

About the Author:
Father Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen, O.C.D., was a Discalced Carmelite priest who became one of the most revered masters of the spiritual life. He acquired a vast knowledge of the ways that lead to holiness and to union with God. His experience with souls, whom he guided to the heights of perfection, was outstanding. He was an expert in the spiritual and mystical doctrine of St. Teresa of Jesus (Avila) and of St. John of the Cross. The Discalced Carmelite nuns of the Monastery of St. Joseph in Rome were the heirs of the Father Gabriel’s vast output of published works and private manuscripts. For ten years, he guided these nuns as their confessor and spiritual director, and it was they who helped him to arrange his material in line with the course of the liturgical year, while following the ascent of the soul to transforming union with God, or to ‘Divine Intimacy.’

Divine Intimacy - Meditations on the Interior Life for every day of the Liturgical Year. The original edition of Divine Intimacy was published in Italian under the title "Intimità Divina del P. Gabrielle di S. Maria Maddalena". This edition is the English translation by the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Boston published under licence from Monastero S. Giuseppe – Carmelitane Scalze, Roma, Italia. This edition has been re-typeset using the text of the 1964 edition originally published by Desclée Company.

Entering Heaven on Earth: The Signs, Symbols, and Saints of Catholic Churches

Entering Heaven on Earth: The Signs, Symbols, and Saints of Catholic Churches
Lew, Lawrence
$34.95

Our Catholic churches are filled with an abundance of signs and symbols, some of which you may have never noticed or understood. The sacred art, architecture, and artifacts of a church building proclaim the Real Presence of Christ, God dwelling among us in the Blessed Sacrament. The saints portrayed within a church are witnesses to Eucharistic living, and we can identify them through various symbols that tell us about their lives, their works, and their witness to the living presence of God.

In Entering Heaven on Earth, Fr. Lawrence Lew, OP, shows you how to decode the signs and symbols found in our churches and to identify the saints depicted in them. This richly illustrated book filled with photographs the author has taken in churches from around the world will help you to see the churches you worship in or visit from a fresh perspective and to remember the true purpose of a church building.

A church is a visible expression of heaven come down to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. It is always, first of all, a place for the Christian people to assemble for the sacred liturgy and celebrate the Eucharist. The beauty of nature, the creativity and craft of mankind, the good works of the virtuous and the just are all brought together in a church building to remind us of the graced activity of God, who is present to make us holy and draw us into a deeper union with him.

Forming Families, Forming Saints

Forming Families, Forming Saints
$17.95

How do we raise children to be saints?

How do we become saints?

From those two questions we draw our mission. As parents, our primary purpose is to raise children fit for eternal life—while we pursue the same for ourselves. If we succeed, it will be our greatest success. If we fail, there is no greater failure imaginable.

Fr. Carter Griffin treats the family mission with the gravity it demands. He considers it a work of deep formation, as crucial and as intentional as the formation of future priests.

In practical chapters, Fr. Griffin, a seminary rector, adapts the four pillars of priestly formation and applies them to family life. He highlights the key virtues that are essential for our children's human, intellectual, spiritual, and apostolic growth.

These pages are rich with testimonies from Catholic parents, exam¬ples from the lives of the saints, and other helpful resources to address specific challenges. Forming Families, Forming Saints offers a framework for children and parents alike to reach the heights of humanity and the heights of holiness.

Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus, Revised and Expanded (Revised)

Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus, Revised and Expanded (Revised)
Weddell, Sherry A
$19.95

How can we transmit a living, personal Catholic faith to future generations? By coming to know Jesus Christ, and following him as his disciples.

As we emerge from a pandemic into a post-Christian world, these are times of immense challenge and enormous opportunity for the Catholic Church in the United States. Consider these statistics:

  • Fully 10 percent of all adults in America are ex-Catholics.
  • Nearly three-quarters of young Catholics think that they could be a good Catholic without going to Mass every Sunday.
  • Catholic marriages have declined by almost two thirds since 1969, even as the number of Catholics in the United States has grown significantly.
  • Only one third of Catholics believe that the bread and wine actually become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ at the consecration during Mass.
  • If the Church is to reverse these trends, the evangelizers must first be evangelized. In other words, Catholics in the pew must make a conscious choice to know and follow Jesus before they can draw others to him.

Ten years after it was first published, Forming Intentional Disciples is still helping scores of Church leaders, parish staff, and all Catholics transform parish life from within. World-renowned author and speaker Sherry Weddell leads you through the steps that will help Catholics enter more deeply into a relationship with God and the river of apostolic creativity, charisms, and vocation that flow from that relationship for the sake of the Church and the world.

    Holiness of Ordinary People

    Holiness of Ordinary People
    Delbrêl, Madeleine
    $17.95

"There are some people whom God takes and sets apart," observes Venerable Madeleine Delbrêl (1904-1964), but "there are others whom he leaves in the masses and whom he does not withdraw from the world. These are people who do ordinary jobs, who have an ordinary household or an ordinary single life. . . . We, the ordinary people of the streets, believe with all our might that this street, that this world where God has placed us, is, for us, the site of our holiness."

French poet, social worker, and lay missionary Madeleine Delbrêl knew that Christ's unspeakable goodness touches the smallest, most forgotten corners of our everyday world--the laundry, the checkout counter, the commute. His word shines before us "while we walk in the street, while we do our work, while we peel our vegetables, while we wait for a phone call, while we sweep our floors. We see it glow between two of our neighbor's sentences and between two letters to write, when we wake up and when we go to sleep." Yet prayer alone gives us the eyes to see it.

This book gathers together essays and notes written by Delbrêl during her most active years, giving peerless insights into the distinctive lay vocation in the Church. All men and women--married and unmarried--must follow the Holy Spirit into all that is true in this world, from the small talk around the coffeepot to the great silence of the Holy Eucharist.

"The holy Church expects saints," she tells us, "and saints are those who love."

Introduction to the Devout Life - Philothea

Introduction to the Devout Life - Philothea
    Sales, Francis de
    $22.95
As no sensible person would make a long road trip without first consulting a map, so the person intent upon gaining Heaven should first resort to a competent guide to reach that Goal of all goals. And no better guide to Heaven exists than An Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), Doctor of the Church. It is at once easy to read, being laid out in short chapters, yet thorough, authoritative, reliable, kind and gentle a mirror of its author. It is a book, moreover, for all, because all are called to the devout life. True devotion to God, the author points out, adorns every vocation. The devout life, moreover, is a lovely, a pleasant, and a happy life. (p. 5)

Addressed as a personal letter to Philothea, the lover of God which genuinely represents the reader the book covers: our first desire to lead a devout life to our full resolution to do so, how we should approach God in prayer and the Sacraments, the practice of 16 important virtues, remedies against ordinary temptations, and becoming confirmed in our practice of devotion. St. Francis says, Devotion is spiritual agility and vivacity, by means of which charity works in us, or we in her, with love and readiness; and as charity leads us to obey and fulfill all God s Commandments, so devotion leads us to obey them with promptitude and diligence. (p. 3)

Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist: Unlocking the Secrets of the Last Supper

Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist: Unlocking the Secrets of the Last Supper
    Pitre, Brant
    $19.00
A revelatory exploration of the Jewish roots of the Last Supper that seeks to understand exactly what happened at Jesus' final Passover--featuring a study guide written by the author.

"Clear, profound and practical--you do not want to miss this book."--Dr. Scott Hahn, author of The Lamb's Supper and The Fourth Cup

Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as: What was the Passover like at the time of Jesus? What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah? What was Jesus' purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover? And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, "This is my body... This is my blood"?

To answer these questions, Pitre explores ancient Jewish beliefs about the Passover of the Messiah, the miraculous Manna from heaven, and the mysterious Bread of the Presence. As he shows, these three keys--the Passover, the Manna, and the Bread of the Presence--have the power to unlock the original meaning of the Eucharistic words of Jesus. Along the way, Pitre also explains how Jesus united the Last Supper to his death on Good Friday and his Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Inspiring and informative, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist is a groundbreaking work that is sure to illuminate one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith: the mystery of Jesus' presence in "the breaking of the bread."

Man of the Beatitudes: Pier Giorgio Frassati

Man of the Beatitudes: Pier Giorgio Frassati
    Frassati, Luciana
    $17.95
A beguiling and moving biography of Pier Giorgio Frassati, a handsome, athletic and fun-loving young man from a rich, aristocratic Italian family in the 1920's who was recently beatified by Pope John Paul II. Pier Giorgio turned from a life of privilege to one devoted to working with the poor, and was a courageous witness of Christian faith and charity to many others.

Discouraged by his affluent parents from his religious involvement and deep spiritual life, Pier Giorgio secretly ministered to the poor and marginalized, and was a leader of youth whose love of God transformed the lives of all those around him. He died of the polio virus at the age of 24, and the story of his life and death spread throughout Europe, influencing the young Karol Wojtyla, who as Pope John Paul II described Frassati as "a man of the eight beatitudes, a modern youth and great mountaineer who was keenly interested in the problems of culture, sports and social questions, as well as the true values of life." Pier Giorgio is a patron saint of World Youth Days. Illustrated.

    Mere Christianity

    Mere Christianity
    Lewis, C S
    $17.99

"C.S. Lewis is the ideal persuader for the half-convinced, for the good man who would like to be a Christian but finds his intellect getting in the way." -- Anthony Burgess, New York Times Book Review

Our moral consciousness and moral judgements are proof to the human race that a moral being exists--God.

Mere Christianity explores the core beliefs of Christianity by providing an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear a powerful, rational case for the Christian faith. A brilliant collection, Mere Christianity remains strikingly fresh for the modern reader and at the same time confirms C. S. Lewis's reputation as one of the leading writer and thinkers of our age.

Miracle Book: A Simple Guide to Asking for the Impossible

Miracle Book: A Simple Guide to Asking for the Impossible
    DeStefano, Anthony
    $24.95

At some point everyone needs a miracle.

It might involve your health, your finances, your family, or feelings of anxiety or hopelessness. But there comes a time when all of us experience the need for supernatural help, whether we have faith or not.

Numerous books have been written on miracles, but few explain in clear, practical, theologically sound language how to ask for one.

So many people in the world are suffering but don't know how to receive help. Some beg and plead with God. Some negotiate, promising that they will change their ways if only He will grant them this one request. But then, if their request is not answered in the way they desire, they lose faith or get angry or sink into despair.

    There is a better way.

There is a method of praying for a miracle that guarantees the best possible chance of getting a yes from God -- or at least alleviation of our stress and satisfaction for our souls.

Bestselling author Anthony DeStefano explains this powerful new approach and, in the process, relates exactly how to overcome your fears and to experience "the peace that transcends all understanding."

Through his conversational style, compelling real-life stories, and wisdom, DeStefano explains:

  • How your prayers can help obtain miracles for yourself and others
  • Ways in which friends and loved ones can help you obtain your miracle
  • How to open your heart to receive "courage infusions" to persevere in trials and overcome fear
  • Ways in which the providential power of paradox can help you obtain the miracle you need
  • How to put all God's "conditions" for granting a miracle in one powerful prayer
  • If you need a miracle right now, this is the book for you. Included inside these covers is the Miracle Prayer, inspirational verses on miracles and hope, and a list of key intercessors for various needs.

    Monaghan: A Life

    Monaghan: A Life
    Pearce, Joseph
    $27.95
Pizza mogul, sports owner, billionaire, devout Catholic, university founder, philanthropist.

These are just a few of the many words that describe Tom Monaghan. The man who built Domino s Pizza into an empire, owned the Detroit Tigers, built a Catholic college, then moved it halfway across the country and turned it into a university surrounded by a growing city is all of those things and more. Much more as both his admirers and detractors would say.
In short, like all humans, he is complex. But at his core is an unwavering Catholicism that has strengthened him amidst adversity and grounded him amidst prosperity. In this volume, Joseph Pearce, the preeminent Catholic biographer of our time, traces Monaghan s life story from the gutter to the stars and, with his own deep knowledge of and devotion to Catholicism, is able to tell it in such a way that the reader will realize and appreciate that, despite missteps along the way, the subject is a man whose greatest desire is not to be among the stars, but rather among the saints in heaven at the end of his earthly pilgrimage. And that, ultimately, should be the desire of us all, flawed as we all are.

The life of Tom Monaghan is an inspiring story of success in the face of what, for many, may have been insurmountable odds, of determination to succeed when it would have been easy to quit, and of a childhood faith rediscovered that changed his life and the lives of so many others."

Stories of miracles abound, and, according to Mirjana, more are yet to come--the Virgin entrusted her with ten prophetic secrets concerning the future of the world.
