St. Francis De Sales
Behold This Heart: St. Francis de Sales and Devotion to the Sacred Heart
True devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus moves us to ponder the unrelenting love of Jesus, fully human and fully divine, as He poured Himself out for the world.
In these pages, Fr. Thomas Dailey transports you beyond the prayers and liturgies and helps you to contemplate the Sacred Heart, which Pope Benedict XVI said "has irreplaceable importance." Fr. Dailey shows you how to experience the way of prayer that formed St. Margaret Mary -- the visionary to whom the devotion was revealed -- in the religious order founded by St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal.
Fr. Dailey's brilliant combination of Salesian spirituality and meditative devotion will enable you to respond to Christ's "divine affection" and experience God's love as never before. Through a series of nine reflections on the Sacred Heart, Fr. Dailey will show you:
How you can live the devout life despite your many worldly responsibilities
Proven ways you can release supernatural confidence and overcome fear
The keys to developing the practice of mental prayer and entering contemplation
How to listen for and discern God's will for your life
Ways you can discover your personal spiritual vocation
Why Pope St. Paul VI called the Sacred Heart devotion "the most effective means of promoting the reform of life and the defeat of atheism"
With Fr. Dailey as your guide, these engaging meditations will transform you as you step through the pages of the greatest love story ever told.

Catholic Controversy: St. Francis de Sales' Defense of the Faith
One of the most remarkable and well-documented events in Catholic history began when a young priest, St. Francis de Sales, volunteered to re-evangelize the Calvinists of the Chablais.
Finding his preaching forcefully rejected, St. Francis de Sales shrewdly switched tactics and began a written apologetics campaign, posting pamphlets on walls and slipping them beneath doors under the cover of night.
His defense of the Faith was so clear and thorough that at the end of four years nearly the entire population of 72,000 had returned to the Catholic Faith!
These powerful little tracts are as relevant today as they were in the late 1500s. St. Francis de Sales draws support from Scripture, the Fathers and Doctors of the Church to address questions still frequently posed by modern Protestants.
Revered as some of the most cogent arguments against Protestantism ever penned; they present a defense of the Catholic Faith that has never been equaled.
Now with beautiful new cover, easier to read size, updated typesetting, and the original content. 320 pps PB
St. Francis de Sales was one of the most effective Catholic apologists and evangelists of the past five centuries. Undoubtedly, he is the most effective apologist to Protestant Calvinists who has ever lived.

De Sales' classic has been described as "a masterpiece of psychology, practical morality, and common sense" and, after The Bible and The Imitation of Christ, is the widest read spiritual book of all time. Unlike many others, Devout Life was written specifically for lay persons and it demonstrates a rare sensitivity to the demands of life in a world that is often antagonistic to spirituality. In this first-of-its-kind edition, Fr. John-Julian offers a fresh translation, a most thorough historical introduction, and notes explaining points of language and theology along the way.

Introduction to the Devout LIfe
"Since its first publication in 1609 this book has never gone out of print. It has always occupied a privileged position in the Church: no guide ever written provides so complete, so balanced and so practical an approach to the spiritual life. Written for the layman surrounded by worldliness, this is a masterpiece of mystical and devotional literature, by a great and much loved Doctor of the Church. This book does what many similar books fail to do, teach the reader to grow in holiness, step by simple step.
St. Francis de Sales was a master psychologist, with a special gift for teaching practical morality. His writings are characterized by sublime common sense. Even non-Christians have admired his prose. Above all, he is a spiritual genius, and thus was made a Doctor of the Church. This book is truly medicine for the soul."

Introduction to the Devout Life (Catholic Classics); hardcover
A new translation of this enduring spiritual classic:
In late 1608, St. Francis de Sales, the Catholic Bishop of Geneva, published his first edition of the Introduction to the Devout Life. The Introduction is a collection of letters of instruction de Sales wrote in response to a relative's many questions about how to live a devout life to Christ. It sold out quickly. His fifth and final edition was published in 1619.
On December 28th, 1622, just three years after publishing the final edition, St. Francis died at the age of 55. He was canonized a Saint in 1665 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1877. He was one of the Church's preeminent Spiritual Directors and fortunately, because he took the time to write the Introduction to the Devout Life, he can be ours today as well. His insights and practical guidance for committing one's life to Christ and staying daily centered on Christ, are timeless and effective. In the Introduction, St. Francis endeavors to transform lives by transforming hearts.
In his prologue, de Sales explains that he arranged the material not for those in the monasteries, but for those who worked and lived in the world and, like those living in monasteries and religious orders, desired a greater devotion to Christ. He addresses his reader as "Philothea," which means "one who loves God." The book is witty, straight forward, biblical, intensely practical, and deeply challenging. He logically arranges the Church's time-honored strategies, teaching, and practices of devotion to make them easy to understand and implement into daily life.
As de Sales says: "LIVE JESUS! Yes, Lord Jesus, live and reign in our hearts forever and ever. Amen."

Sign of the Cross: The Fifteen Most Powerful Words in the English Language
From the young St. Francis de Sales's heroic efforts to bring Calvinists back to the Faith comes this succinct, eloquent defense of the age-old Catholic practice of making the Sign of the Cross, which sixteenth-century Calvinists denounced as a Popish invention and many Protestants scorn even today.
Embodying the zeal of youth and the wisdom of age, this gentle jewel of Catholic apologetics traces the origins of the Sign of the Cross back to the Fathers of the Church, to the Apostles before them, and finally to our Lord Himself.
Along with St. Francis's other lucid explanations of our Catholic Faith and his undaunted love even for those who hated him, this modest book helped restore to their native Catholic faith tens of thousands of heretics who not long before were intent on killing him.
As they did for the Calvinists in St. Francis's day, so in our day these pages will bring you a better understanding and a renewed love for the Sign of the Cross, that brief and lively exterior prayer by which, from time immemorial, God has been invoked by serious Christians before all of their endeavors.
Among the other things you'll learn here:
Outside the Creed itself, there are few topics to which the Fathers testify as universally and unanimously as the pious practice of making, frequently and well, the Sign of the Cross. With the help of these holy pages, the saints' love for it will enkindle yours. Soon you'll be saying with St. Jerome, "With every work, with all of my comings and goings, may my hand make the Sign of the Cross!"
