Meeting St. Mark Today: Understanding the Man, His Mission, and His Message

Meeting St. Mark Today: Understanding the Man, His Mission, and His Message
    Harrington, Daniel J
    $12.95

Meeting St. Mark Today, the final book in Fr. Daniel J. Harrington's series on the Gospels, is a straightforward, practical resource for lay Catholics who want a better understanding of this synoptic Gospel. And, like the other books in the Meeting . . . Today series, it effectively closes the gap between modern biblical scholarship and authentic Christian spirituality.

The book begins with background information on the Evangelist and his Gospel, and then moves quickly into a concise but complete narrative analysis of the Gospel. Part Three of the book explains how Mark's Gospel provides answers to two essential questions: What did Jesus suffer?, and Why did Jesus suffer? It also proposes answers to the universal question, Why do people suffer? The book's final section includes five meditations on suffering. Additionally, each chapter concludes with questions for reflection and discussion, ideal for group or individual Bible study.

Ultimately, Meeting St. Mark Today opens the theological treasure chest of this Gospel, enabling us to see how Jesus' suffering and the mystery of the cross can reshape our faith and our lives.

A clear, concise, and respectful presentation of Mark's Gospel--and what Jesus' suffering means for us

Daniel J. Harrington, SJ, is well known for his superb New Testament scholarship, but he is also highly regarded for his exceptional ability to bridge the gap between modern biblical scholarship and authentic Christian spirituality. In Meeting St. Mark Today, the final book in this series on the Gospels, Harrington
has provided another straightforward, practical resource for lay Catholics who want a better understanding of this
    synoptic Gospel.
The book begins with background information on the Evangelist and his Gospel. It moves quickly into a concise but complete narrative analysis of the Gospel, which clearly demonstrates the human side of Jesus. Part Three of the book explains how Mark's Gospel provides answers to two essential questions: What did Jesus suffer?, and Why did Jesus suffer? It also proposes answers to the universal question, Why do people suffer? The book's final section includes five meditations on suffering, based on lectionary readings from Year B (St. Mark) in the Sunday lectionary cycle.
Each chapter concludes with questions for reflection and discussion, making Meeting St. Mark Today an ideal resource for individual Scripture study or group Bible study. The readings from Mark's Gospel for all Sundays and Feasts in Cycle B are listed at the end of the book.
Ultimately, Meeting St. Mark Today opens the theological treasure chest of this easily overlooked Gospel, enabling us to see how Jesus' suffering and the mystery of the cross can reshape our faith and our lives.

Finally, he helps readers properly interpret Paul's letters through literary, historical, and theological lenses.

Mission of the Messiah: On the Gospel of Luke

    Mission of the Messiah
    Gray, Tim
    $14.95
Mission of the Messiah is a compelling study of the Gospel of Luke that presents the messianic mission of Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. The review questions at the end of each chapter provide fresh material for individual reflection or group discussion. This book is a must for anyone whose heart is burning to know and love Christ more profoundly. From the Introduction: The goal of this study of Luke is to give a taste of that Bible study Jesus gave on the road to Emmaus. As we study God's holy Word, our hearts too will burn with the fire of God's love (cf. Lk. 12:49), just as the disciples experienced God's love on the dusty road to Emmaus. If we read the Gospel with the prayer and contemplation that Saint Thérèse did, we too shall find "fresh lights there, hidden and enthralling meanings." Dr. Tim Gray is the President of the Augustine Institute, an MA program in Sacred Scripture and Evangelization & Catechesis in Denver. He is also Professor of Sacred Scripture at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary. He holds a PhD in Biblical Studies from Catholic University of America, a Th.M. in Scripture from Duke University, and an M.A. in theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville. A nationally renowned speaker, Dr. Gray has filmed numerous series for EWTN. He is a partner with Jeff Cavins in The Great Adventure Bible Timeline Catholic Bible study series. Dr. Gray resides in Littleton, Colorado with his wife, Kris, and their son Joseph. About the Series: The Kingdom studies explore the teaching and mission of Jesus Christ as revealed in the New Testament and carried on by His Church. Solid, trustworthy content in language anyone can appreciate.

Mother Angelica's Lessons on Genesis: Mother Angelica Teaches the Bible

Mother Angelica's Lessons on Genesis: Mother Angelica Teaches the Bible
    Angelica, Mother
    $18.95

Many books approach Scripture with a scholarly method, critically examining each line and interpreting symbols or metaphors in a way that can be hard to digest. Refreshingly, Mother Angelica unpacks biblical lessons from a "grassroots" perspective for the average person. Her meat-and-potatoes explanations reveal the meaning of the Scriptures in ways you can understand and relate to in your life. She invites you to ask yourself: What's in it for me?

This book is drawn from Mother's popular Bible Stories Spirituality television series. Through her personal accounts and down-to-earth reflections, you will enter into each passage and experience God's love and guidance as never before. You will also see how the stories you read in Scripture are still occurring today, only with an ever-new cast of characters.

Mother encourages you to stand in wonder of God's creation and contemplate His generosity, rather than trying to "figure things out." In her conversational way, she explores stories in Genesis and connects them to your story. She also shows how the Old Testament is fulfilled in the New Testament and the sacramental life of the Church.

In these compelling pages, you will discover how deeply you are cherished by God and how close He is to you, especially in difficult times. You will also learn:

  • Three ways to attain the wedding garment for eternal life
  • Practical ways to grow in virtue and combat vice through the Precious Blood of Jesus
  • What to do during life's deserts when life seems impossible
  • Ways you can imitate Abraham and other biblical models of holiness
  • How similar your struggles are to the struggles of biblical figures who learned "the hard way"
  • The means by which you can help release an ocean of God's mercy in our world
  • Moreover, Mother's life lessons will show you how to stop looking back in order to look ahead and how to enjoy the promises of God. You will see the importance of consulting the Lord in all things and the power of your prayers in helping convert sinners -- even at the last moment of their lives.

Furthermore, you will find out how to restore true reverence for God in your life and in our world. Most significantly, you will discover how to read the Bible with the faith of a child so you may enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Mystical Meaning of Numbers in Sacred Scripture

Mystical Meaning of Numbers in Sacred Scripture
    Seville, St Isidore
    $19.95

"In measure, and in number, and in weight Thou hast ordered all things."

    --Wisdom 11:21

Discover the divine language of numbers with The Mystical Meaning of Numbers in Sacred Scripture, a timeless work by the influential Doctor of the Church, St. Isidore of Seville (560-636), now available in English for the very first time. As a prolific author who also served as the bishop of Seville, Spain, St. Isidore unveils how sacred authors used numbers to convey important messages and to infuse mystical symbolism into Scripture.

Part of TAN's celebrated Resurrection Series, this beautiful translation by Fr. Robert Nixon, OSB, opens the world of biblical numerology, long understood as key to unlocking mysteries of deep spiritual significance. The authors of Sacred Scripture, writes Fr. Nixon, understood that "the universe was a harmonious and precisely numbered ordered system, reflecting through this numerical ordering the glory and beauty of the Deity." Because these numbers are spiritually significant, St. Isidore intends to equip readers "with the knowledge and insights to penetrate their hidden and mystical meanings."

This edition offers thoughtful enhancements from Fr. Nixon, including:

  • A faithful, yet accessible English translation from the original Latin
  • A short biography of St. Isidore taken from the Tridentine Breviary
  • Extensive footnotes that help clarify, contextualize and illuminate the author's insights

    Navarre Bible New Testament Expanded
    $84.95

This latest edition of the Navarre Bible includes extensive Catholic commentary for the entire New Testament all in one volume. It has wide-ranging general introductions, individual book introductions, a table of sources cited, maps, and informative notes. Compiled by the faculty of the University of Navarre, the commentaries draw on a huge variety of sources: Church documents, the writings of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, and the work of prominent spiritual writers. Scholarly yet readable, the Navarre Bible commentaries offer a comprehensive intellectual, historical, and spiritual survey of the riches of the New Testament. They are a wonderful aid in the prayerful reading of Scripture (Lectio Divina).

    Navarre-Exodus
    Bible, Editors Navarre
    $19.95
'Exodus, ' meaning 'going out, ' is the title the Greek translators gave the second book of the Bible, the second book of the Pentateuch. This Navarre Bible volume contains the entire text of Exodus, together with a commentary. The children of Israel initially enjoyed peace and prosperity in Egypt, but under a new regime they were oppressed and enslaved. Eventually God in his providence chose Moses as their leader and liberator; and they made good their escape (probably in the 13th century BC). They were to spend 40 years in the wilderness of Sinai before reaching the Holy Land. The accounts contained here cover the most important early events in the history of Israel and prefigure the salvation wrought by Christ the Lord.

    Navarre-Genesis

    Navarre-Genesis
    Bible, Editors Navarre
    $17.95
Genesis - which deals with the 'origins' of the world and mankind - is the first book of the Bible, the first book of the Pentateuch, the Law of Moses, the Hebrew Torah. The author is not attempting to write a scholarly account (which would be based on the primitive scientific notions of his time). To understand this book correctly, the reader must remember that the focus of Genesis is a religious one. The commentary found here takes account of modern scholarship, which it sets in the context of the abiding teaching of the Church and the insights of the Fathers and other revered authors.

    Navarre-Wisdom Books

    Navarre-Wisdom Books
    $47.95

This volume, which follows the pattern of the highly successful Navarre Bible New Testament, consists of the Revised Standard Version and the New Vulgate with a Commentary by members of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Navarre, Spain.

One of the most striking aspects of both these books is the use of poetry. Although poetic language is to be found in many Old Testament books, it is the predominant form in these ones. The book of Psalms and the Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon) contain lyric poetry, whereas the other books consist mainly of proverbs or aphorisms in verse form, and wisdom poems in varying lengths. This is primarily why the Psalms and the Song are described as poetical books, and the others as wisdom books.

This volume also contains notes, introductions, and Latin. The editors' notes, which are rarely very technical, are designed to elucidate the spiritual and theological message of the Bible.
